What's New
5 April 2023- The "Search This Site" facility (on the left column of every page) should now be working again. I have fixed the issues in the script that caused problems when my web host upgraded their system. Sorry for the inconvenience.
- New page: Two Ways to View a Binary File on Windows Without Installing Anything. This article shows you how to view a binary file, with hexadecimal code and its ASCII equivalent side-by-side, on Windows without having to install a third-party binary/hex viewer.
- For those of you who asked, no, this site isn't dead. It's just one of 3 sites that I maintain, the other two being thesitewizard.com (a site about how you can design a website) and thefreecountry.com (a site about free stuff on the Internet). I try to put new articles and stuff into the relevant site, and since a lot of the new "How To" articles have to do with website-making, they ended up on thesitewizard.com instead of here.
- New page: How to Get the Hash (MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512) of a File on Windows Without Installing Anything. Sometimes, when you download a file, the website you get it from also lists its MD5, SHA1, SHA256 and SHA512 hashes, so that you can verify that the file you obtained has not been tampered with or corrupted in transit. This article shows you how you can check those hashes using Windows' built-in programs.
- New page: How to Solve the 0x80092004 Error When Installing a Windows 7 Security-Only/Monthly Update. If you were unable to install the most recent Windows Update (eg, either the security-only or monthly quality one) on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 because of a stop error 0x80092004, this article shows you how to solve it.
- The article on How to Force Windows Explorer to Always Show You the File Extensions has been updated to include information on how to do this on Windows 10 (in addition to the previous versions, such as Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP).
- New page: How to Record a Game Video. If you want to record a video of your game playthrough, either for posting to a video sharing site or to put on your own website, you may be interested in this guide. It shows you how you can set up and use free (and open source) software on your computer to record your gameplay.
- New page: How to Boot a CD or DVD in Windows 8.1. If you have a system with Windows 8.1 preinstalled, you may find that you are unable to boot from a CD/DVD even if you have configured your UEFI/BIOS to do this in preference to your hard disk. This article shows you how to do this.
- New page: How to Change BIOS Settings on a Computer with Windows 8.1 Installed. If you are wondering how you can get into the BIOS Setup screen on a computer that comes with Windows 8.1, here's how to do it.
